M153-1

Catheter urine: >100 x 10ˆ6 cfu/L -Mixed flora –  Shipped 02 November 2015

HISTORY

A simulated catheter urine collected from an 83 year old female patient in a nursing home was sent to category A, B, and C laboratories. Participants were expected to report mixed flora.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M153-1

  1. Patients with indwelling catheters are colonized rapidly after the first few days, often with multiple potential pathogens.
  2. Mixed cultures should be reported without quantification or iden-tification of individual isolates. Collection of fresh specimens should be recommended.
