Stool: Shigella sonnei  – Shipped November 2014

HISTORY

The challenge was sent to category A and B laboratories. The sample was a simulated stool obtained from a 41 year old male patient with diarrhea; the patient was a traveler returning from Cuba.

Participants were expected to isolate and report Shigella sonnei, perform and report susceptibilities, and report the isolate to Public Health (PH) authorities.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M143-3

  1. Shigella sonnei accounted for the majority of Shigella identifications with two thirds of the isolations, followed mainly by S. flexneri.
