M142-1

Throat: No group A, C, or G streptococci; no Arcanobacterium haemolyticum  – Shipped August 2014

HISTORY

This challenge was sent to category A, B, and C laboratories. The sample was a simulated throat swab obtained from a 19 year old stu-dent with sore throat living in a college dorm.

Laboratories were expected to report the ab-sence of pharyngitis associated pathogens.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M142-1

  1. Relying only on rapid grouping tests without consideration of colony size or other phenotypic tests, may result in a non-pathogenic organism being falsely reported as the cause of pharyngitis.
  2. Laboratories should put into place measures to ensure they are able to distinguish small-colony forming β hemolytic streptococ-cus from the pyogenic species.
