Stool: Plesiomonas shigelloides  – Shipped February 2014

HISTORY

The challenge was sent to category A and B laboratories. The sample was a simulated stool obtained from a 27 year old female patient with traveler’s diarrhea.

Laboratories were expected to isolate, identify, and report Plesiomonas shigelloides.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M134-3

  1. Travelers may present with diarrhea caused by organisms that are unusual in the community in Canada.
  2. Although Plesiomonas shigelloides is an uncommon enteric pathogen it was readily identified by most participating laboratories.
