Peritoneal fluid: Candida glabrata– Shipped August 2012
The challenge was sent to category A laboratories. The sample was a simulated peritoneal fluid obtained from a 38 year old diabetic patient with renal failure.
Laboratories were expected to isolate, identify, and report Candida glabrata.
MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M122-5
- A significant number of infections caused by yeast yield Candida glabrata. As it is less predictably susceptible to fluconazole than C. albicans, it is important to differentiate these two common yeasts, and to rule out C. albicans when possible.
