Infected wound:  Erysipelothrix species – Shipped November 2011

HISTORY

The sample was a simulated wound sample from a 64 year old man with an infected wound to the hand. It was sent to category A laboratories which were requested to process and report as per their usual protocol.

Participants were expected to isolate and report Erysipelothrix species. No susceptibility testing was required.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M113-4

  1. Catalase-negative, Gram positive rods isolated from wounds should be tested for H2S production to confirm the identification of Erysipelothrix species.
