Wound swab: normal skin flora – Shipped November 2011

HISTORY

A simulated wound swab obtained from a 43 year old female with skinned knee (outpatient) was sent to category A and B laboratories.

Participants were provided with the results of the Gram smear: rare/1+ neutrophils, 1+ gram positive cocci, 1+ gram positive bacilli. Participants were expected to report normal skin flora.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from M113-3

  1. Technologists should recognize which organisms are likely to be skin flora.
  2. If organisms are listed, an interpretive comment should be included to indicate the organisms are considered skin flora or non-pathogenic.
