Throat: Group C streptococcus, large beta-hemolytic colony – Shipped August 2011

HISTORY

A swab simulating a throat sample obtained from a 22 year old student with recurrent pharyngitis was sent to category A, B, and C laboratories.

Participants were expected to report group C streptococcus.

  1. It is important to differentiate beta-hemolytic streptococci of the pyogenic group from those belonging to the S. anginosus group, which may be present as normal oro-pharyngeal flora.
