HISTORY

A simulated joint fluid sample collected from a 6 year old refugee was sent to category A and C1 laboratories for Gram staining.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from GS202-2

  1. H. influenzae is an important cause of joint infection in both children and adults
  2. While Gram stain is an important diagnostic procedure that can produce useful information quickly, it may also be insensitive for the detection of likely pathogens in joint infections.
