Gram – CSF: 2+ (1-5/oif) neutrophils –3+ 11-50/oif gram positive bacilli (Listeria monocytogenes) – Shipped August 12, 2019 – FINAL RESULTS

HISTORY

A simulated CSF sample collected from a 78 year old with onset ataxia was sent to category A, C, and C1 laboratories.
Participants were expected to report the presence of neutrophils and gram positive bacilli.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from GS192-2

  1. Listeria monocytogenes may sometimes be a difficult pathogen to identify on CSF Gram stain, but is identification as gram-positive bacilli/coccobacilli is important to guide clinicians in selecting appropriate antibacterial therapy.
  2. L. monocytogenes is a pathogen of Public Health importance.
