HISTORY

A simulated joint fluid sample collected from a 35 year old with a swollen sore knee was sent to category A, C, and C1 laboratories.

Participants were expected to the presence of neutrophils and gram positive cocci in chains

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from GS182-2

  1. Laboratories should be able to recognize the presence of leukocytes and gram positive cocci in pairs and short chains in joint fluids.
  2. After Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus species are the bacteria next most frequently isolated from adults with native joint septic arthritis.
