GS182-1

Gram – CSF: 4+ (>10/oif) neutrophils; gram negative diplococci (N. meningitidis) – Shipped August 13, 2018

HISTORY

A simulated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample collected from a 21 year old with headache and fever was sent to category A, C, and C1 laboratories.

Participants were expected to report the presence of neutrophils and gram negative diplococci

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from GS182-1

  1. The Gram stain can provide rapid and important diagnostic information to clinicians.
  2. CSF Gram stains can frequently identify a bacterial pathogen when present (suggesting the infection does not have a viral etiology) and frequently can indicate the probable bacterial genus/species causing meningitis.
