HISTORY

A simulated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) smear collected from a 2 year old female patient was sent to category A, B, C, and C1 laboratories.
Participants were expected to report the presence of neutrophils and gram positive cocci/diplococci.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from GS172-1

  1. Accurate Gram stain process and interpretation is of utmost importance for critical samples such as CSF.
  2. Misreporting a Gram stain on a CSF may result in inappropriate treatment of the patient.
