HISTORY

A simulated wound sample collected from a 22 year old Hodkin’s patient with a dog bite and infected leg wound was sent to category A, C, and C1 laboratories.
Participants were expected to report the presence of neutrophils and gram negative bacilli.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from G192

  1. Close dog and cat contact is the key factor in acquiring this organism — in particular, scratches, bites, and licking of human wounds.
  2. Capnocytophaga canimorsus may be missed on wound cultures due to normal skin overgrowth. The organism is characteristically isolated from blood.
