HISTORY

A simulated wound sample collected from a 22 year old male patient with an infected leg wound was sent to category A, C, and C1 laboratories.

Participants were expected to report the presence of neutrophils and gram positive bacilli.

  1. Accurate interpretation and timely reporting of Gram stains from wound cultures is helpful in guiding empiric therapy of infected wounds. It may also be useful in interpreting the clinical significance of subsequent culture results.
