Gram – Leg Wound: gram negative bacilli and neutrophils  – Shipped August 2013

HISTORY

A simulated wound smear collected from a 24 year old male with a water skiing leg injury was sent to category A, B, C, and C1 laboratories for Gram staining.

Participants were expected to report the presence of gram negative bacilli and neutrophils.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from G132

  1. Gram stain results from wound specimens are useful to provide rapid information on possible microbial causes of infection.
  2. The Gram stain assessment of the cellular response is useful to assess the clinical significance of isolates.
