This sample was sent as simulated skin scrapings. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Trichophyton mentagrophytes.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1404-2

  • Distinguishing T. rubrum strains from members of the T. mentagrophytes species complex is a common problem in the mycology laboratory.
  • T. mentagrophytes is a common cause of athlete’s foot 2 and it frequently causes the more inflammatory type of infections with the formation of bullous vesicles in the thin skin of the plantar arch and along the sides of the feet and heel.
