Skin/Scalp: Trichophyton violaceum – Shipped 13 April 2015

HISTORY

This challenge was sent as a simulated skin/scalp sample from a pediatric patient. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Trichophyton violaceum.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1504-2

  • T. violaceum is a difficult dermatophyte to identify due to its slow growth, growth requirements and lack of macro or microconidia.
  • T. violaceum is an anthropophilic species that primarily causes tinea capitis.
