Blood culture: Candida glabrata – Shipped January 2014

HISTORY

This sample was sent as a simulated positive blood culture. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Candida glabrata. It was also expected that laboratories would perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), if possible, or refer the sample for testing.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1401-1

  • Among non-albicans Candida species, C. tropicalis, C. glabrata and C. parapsilosis are the three most important species that cause candidemia and account for around 40% of episodes.
  • Correct and prompt identification of pathogenic fungi, causing systemic infections and candidemia, plays an important role in the application of suitable therapy.
