Educational Highlights

  • Giardiasis is diagnosed by finding cysts and/or trophozoites in the feces, and both life cycle stages have a characteristic appearance.
  • Infection with Giardia includes asymptomatic cyst passage (5-15% of cases), acute self-limiting diarrhea (25-50%), and a chronic syndrome of diarrhea, malabsorption, and weight loss.
