1309-4

Wound: Alternaria species – Shipped September 2013

HISTORY

The sample was sent as a simulated post traumatic hand infection from a vineyard worker in Ontario. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Alternaria species.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1309-4

  • Mycological culture is very important for the identification of the fungal agent. In direct preparations Alternaria infectoria hyphae usually appear hyaline after as they are poorly melanised.
  • Alternaria infection in humans often follows percutaneous injury during contact with plants and soil and manifests as cutaneous or subcutaneous lesions.
