Scalp: Trichophyton tonsurans – Shipped January 2013

HISTORY

This sample was sent as simulated scalp scrapings from a 6 year old girl with a scalp infection. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Trichophyton tonsurans.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1301-2

  • T. tonsurans is an anthropophilic species most frequently causing tinea capitis and less frequently tinea corporis.
  • Although the incidence of Trichophyton tonsurans dermatophytoses in adults is variable, this organism has emerged as a leading cause of pediatric dermatophytoses in the United States.
