1301-1

Central line: Candida parapsilopsis – Shipped January 2013

HISTORY

This sample was sent as a simulated central line sample. Laboratories were expected to isolate, identify, and perform susceptibility testing to antifungal agents according to their protocols, or refer the sample to an appropriate laboratory for further testing.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1301-1

  • Because of increasing incidence of Candida infections in hospitals, laboratories in large tertiary care facilities should be able to perform antifungal testing against primary agents used to treat these infections, or refer to reference laboratories that can provide rapid turn-around of results.
  • Regardless of the species, a single isolate of Candida from blood should be considered significant whether it comes from an immunocompromised or immunocompetent patient.
