MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1209-2

  • Risk factors for onychomycosis include humidity, occlusive footwear, repeated nail trauma, and concurrent disease in the affected area. In most patients onychomycosis is preceded by a long persisting interdigital mycosis.
  • Humans are the primary host of Epidermophyton floccosum, the only species of the genus known to be pathogenic.
