This sample was sent as a simulated nail sample. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Trichophyton verrucosum.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1204-2

  • T. verrucosum is a zoophilic fungus causing ringworm in cattle. Infection in humans result from direct contact with cattle or infected fomites and are usually highly inflammatory. involving the scalp, beard, or exposed areas of the body.
  • Identification of infection due to T. verrucosum and its differentiation from bacterial infections are important for prompt treatment of patients and cattle to prevent their spread in the community.
