HISTORY

This sample was sent as a simulated skin scrapings sample. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Microsporum gypseum.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1201-2

  • Topical corticosteroids may change the appearance of dermatophytic lesions which can present as eczema-like, lichenoid and psoriasis-like lesions.
  • M. gypseum is distributed world-wide and infects children and rural workers during warm humid weather.
