1101-1

Blood culture: Rhodotorula species – Shipped January 2011

HISTORY

This sample was sent as a simulated positive blood culture. Laboratories were expected to isolate and identify Rhodotorula species. It was also expected that laboratories would perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), if possible, or refer the sample for this testing.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL POINTS from 1101-1

  • Rhodotorula species have emerged as opportunistic pathogens with the ability to colonise and infect susceptible patients.
  • Central venous catheters are a major risk factor for Rhodotorula fungemia.
